Sherry Garlick Stanton from California, USA:
It’s been a while since I was in contact with you last about the article on William Millar whose store became the Pretoria branch of Garlicks. (‘Great granddaughter of Garlicks’ founder shares info’ in May 2016.)

I was researching the life of my great grandfather, John Garlick, the founder of the Garlicks store. On The Bronberger’s website, I came across your interesting article ‘Karakters op ‘n kruising: Stories oor Ou Pretoria se winkeliers’, published in June 2015.

I have an interesting story to share with you about a serendipitous meeting on a plane trip from Cape Town to Johannesburg. I began chatting with the fellow next to me, asking about the reason for his visit to Cape Town. In return he asked about mine. I told him about my research.

The accidental entrepreneur – John Garlick: His life and legacy

His face lit up with excitement as he told me the story about his wife’s grandfather who was the manager of the Pretoria branch of Garlicks for many years, from the 1920s, when it was still called William Millar.

I heard from his wife a short while later and she passed on the most wonderful stories of mr Reich, longtime Garlicks Pretoria’s valued manager. I had read about mr Reich in the Garlick Papers at UCT’s Special Collections Library, but never once thought I would meet, by e-mail, his granddaughter!

I have now completed my book about the founder of Garlicks, ‘The accidental entrepreneur – John Garlick: His life and legacy’.
