Danny from Zwavelpoort writes:
I live in Zwavelpoort on the Bronberg. One day while walking around the house I noticed a baby bird scampering around. Being an amateur ornithologist, I caught the bird and identified it as a lesser honeyguide.

I was soon badgered by two adult mocking chats which wanted their little one back. I let the bird go and thought about what had happened. Here are my conclusions: the mocking chat does not build its own nest but chases away European swallows from their nest and takes it over.

The honey guide is parasitic to the swallows and laid its egg there. The mocking chats raised the young honey guide as their own. Poetic justice I would say.
