With their March gathering the Tierpoort Seniors learned to say “Thank you” in Arabic as Hanelie Jaume transported them on a magical carpet ride through Morocco via the Shokran venue in Tierpoort.

Through bewildering labyrinths of the Marrakesh ‘souk’ they sipped mint tea from intricately decorated ‘berrads’, ate plump olives, Moroccan bread and mint yoghurt. Filigree lamps reflected a myriad of patterns as they imagined overladen donkeys, dentists’ gruesome wares, leather poufs, conical pottery tagines and heard the whisper of dry scales as the snake charmers beckoned.

The mosaic fountain tinkled, while aromatic spices on roasted butternut with couscous and beef koftas steered the magic carpet towards the ‘kasbahs’, the mud fortresses built by generations of Moroccans. The magic carpet ride ended with Farina tarts at Casablanca’s ‘Rick’s Café’, recalling the misty-eyed Bergman and the gallant Bogart.
In their autumn years, a few of the Tierpoort Seniors softly sang, “You must remember this, a kiss is still a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh, the fundamental things apply, as time goes by”.
