You have until 12 December to comment on the draft environmental impact assessment report (EIAR) and environmental management programme (EMP) for the proposed sand mine at Kaalfontein, next to Rayton.

Insite Trading (Pty) Ltd is applying for a mining right in terms of the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) on portions 7, 9 and 55 of the farm Kaalfontein 513 JR.

The application area is 505,2 ha. There are existing excavations on the property, which was previously mined for diamonds and left unrehabilitated. A prospecting right was approved for the property and prospecting was concluded for portions of the property.

Sufficient sand resources were identified to apply for a mining right on 308 ha. A portion of this land is ecologically sensitive and will be conserved. Other portions have no sand resources and will remain agriculture.

Kaalfontein portions 7, 9 and 55 with the town of Rayton to the north, Rietfontein to the west and Rooikopjes to the east

One of the studies includes a map that indicates the study area’s current land use capability. It states that there is no high potential arable land; 299,9 ha medium potential arable land; and
205,6 ha with very low potential or none.

A scoping report was accepted by the Department of Minerals and Energy and members of the public now have the chance to comment on the EIAR and EMP. A copy is available at the farm Kaalfontein or it can be downloaded at:
