“Love and marriage goes together like a horse and carriage.” In Azurdee and John Smuts’ case the wedding bells, which rang on the American side of the ocean, went together with American Saddlebred horses.

John, who is the head trainer at Rovic Stables, an American Saddlebred horse farm on Lynnwood Road in Zwavelpoort, met Azurdee 15 years ago when he went to study the Saddlebreds in Kentucky.

Azurdee is from Henderson, Kentucky and she studied psychology at the University of Kentucky. They got married and came to South Africa eight years ago. Today she is the lead singer of Azurdee & The Blue River Band, an original country rock group which just released their debut album, ‘Kentucky Fried’.

The group finds inspiration from Johnny Cash, Sugarland, Sheryl Crow, Eric Clapton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, old fashioned country upbringing and die-hard redneck fun.

Ludwig Bouwer is on bass guitar, Darren Terry on lead guitar and mandolin, Nicholas Vorster on percussion and Azurdee on vocals, rhythm guitar and mountain dulcimer.

Azurdee & The Blue River Band has shared the stage with some of South Africa's top performing artists, including Albert Frost, Jack Parow and The Black Cat Bones. They have performed at venues and festivals all over the country, and are preparing for an extensive tour both locally and internationally.
